Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that visiting a church for the very first time can be an intimidating experience. It is our desire to make you feel at home and answer any questions you might have about First Presbyterian Church. We recommend that you look around the website as a good starting point. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.

What is your worship service like?
At First Presbyterian Church, we believe people come to know, believe, and live for Christ through the reading, preaching, praying and singing of Scripture, which we call “the ordinary means of grace.” This means that our service is filled with and regulated by the Bible. We include music that connects us with the historic church while at the same time, including songs written within the last few years. We don’t select music on the basis of whether it is “traditional” or “contemporary,” but rather on the basis of its biblical fidelity, singablility, poetic and musical beauty, and ability to be understood by the congregation. Our music is typically accompanied by the organ or grand piano, although we often include the acoustic guitar, violin, and soft percussion instruments.

While the entire service is a service of worship, the preaching of the word is the centerpiece. Sermons typically last for about 35 minutes.  Although we occasionally explore a topical series, we generally select a book of the Bible and preach consecutively through it.

To learn more about what this week’s service will look like, explore the “Worship Bulletins” link under the “Worship” tab.

How should I dress?
Some men wear a suit and tie and others wear jeans and a polo shirt. Some women wear dresses while others wear a skirt and a nice top.  Either way, you will neither stick out nor be judged regardless of what you choose to wear.

What is available for children and youth?
We offer nursery for children from birth through age three during both the Sunday School and worship service times.  We also offer a children’s class for kids aged four through six during the service. Sunday School is offered for ages two to five, six to eight, and nine to twelve, which typically includes singing, a Bible lesson, and a craft.

A Sunday School class is offered for middle school and high school students.  The youth also gather on Sunday evenings at 6:00.

What are your beliefs?
Our beliefs are summarized on the “About -> Our Denomination” link.

How often do you celebrate the Lord's Supper (or communion)?
We celebrate the Lord's Supper on the first Sunday of every month.

Do you offer Children's Church?
During our service of worship, we offer a nursery for children ranging from newborn to 2-years, and a toddler class for children between ages 2 and 3.  Children in aged 4 through second grade remain with their parents in the service until the offertory (immediately before the sermon), at which time parents may choose to have their children attend the “Children’s Church” class.

Do you have small groups?
We offer several men's and women's small group studies. The groups typically spend some informal time together before the time of study, training, discussion, and prayer. All of our groups are open to anyone who wishes to attend. For more information, contact Kim Clark at .
